Leapfrog beyond traditional modelling software methods...
Implicit Modelling versus Traditional Modelling...what’s the difference and why use it?
Traditional modelling software methods require extensive manual digitisation of geological structures, a time consuming procedure which also complicates updating of models as new data becomes available. In contrast, Leapfrog's implicit modelling approach accelerates the creation of models directly from geological data based on the parameters and trends provided.
Implicit modelling is highly flexible and allows tasks such as the changing of wireframe resolution, dynamic updating of models, the consideration of alternative scenarios and the comparison of numeric and geological models to be performed quickly and easily.
Leapfrog enables geologists to build, maintain and compare dynamic 3D geological models directly from geological data within hours and days as opposed to weeks and months! By minimising time spent manually digitising and doing sectional interpretation, geologists can concentrate on extracting maximum value from the data for more informed decision making.
How does it work?
Leapfrog uses an implicit modelling approach based on Radial Basis Functions. These RBFs are equivalent to kriging. This means that Leapfrog defines grade shells and other surfaces with mathematical functions rather than explicitly defining them using the contours on section. The mathematical functions tell what values we expect at all points in space.
Leapfrog's surfaces are extracted by following a constant value around in space and producing triangles as it goes. The resulting surfaces are visual representations of those underlying functions and are approximate - they don't exactly follow the functions. How closely they follow the functions is controlled by the resolution of the mesh, i.e., the edge length of the triangles.
When and where can I use Leapfrog?
An indispensible tool for front-end 3D visualisation, Leapfrog can be used for the rapid analysis of geologic, GIS, geophysical, geochemical and geotechnical data. Leapfrog Mining is being applied in mining, targeting and drillhole planning in advanced exploration and for the rapid assessment of due diligence projects. Leapfrog is not a GMP but works seamlessly with all of your current software tools to accelerate your geological modelling.

It must be noted that whilst Leapfrog is a powerful tool, valid geological models cannot be produced by the software on its own, geological interpretation is required. Like any specialist tool, Leapfrog requires adequate training and the application of domain knowledge in order to produce optimal results. Read more about Leapfrog training here.
